With sediment filters, the most commonly used size is 1 micron simply because it is usually used before a carbon filter to stop the carbon filter clogging up prematurely. However, there are many types to choose from, so remember the larger the micron , the less it stops but in a whole house situation, 10,20 and 50 micron are the way to go.
